Intro to Hand Embroidery: Drawing With Thread

1-Day, 2.5-Hour Workshop: Sunday, April 13 | 12:00-2:30p
In this beginner-friendly class, participants will create an embroidery sampler to learn and practice foundational embroidery stitches. Students will be given a kit of all the materials needed to jump into this exciting craft. Katharine will guide students in every step of the process they need to get started, including setting up an embroidery hoop, deciding on a motif, mark making on fabric to guide the work, the mechanical process of each stitch, and other tips and tricks. Katharine will discuss the elements of design and how they can be incorporated into an embroidery piece. Students can engage in discussion and practice around how and when to use various stitches, the benefits of using a kit or pre-made design or stitching straight from the imagination, and brainstorm ideas of how to use embroidery with the class. Students will receive a handout to guide them in practicing stitches on their own, and guidance on how they might incorporate a variety of stitches in future embroidery work.
Students will leave the class with an embroidery sampler that will include practice of each of these stitches:
